Architect GP

An approachable way for smart homeowners to get what they really want from their home.

What is Architect GP?

Architect GP connects you with fully registered and insured architects who will meet you in your home, or over the phone.

Just as you visit your GP when you’re sick, or your accountant at tax time, you can see your Architect GP when you need some help – big or small – to make your home more aligned with your life.

Your home is likely to be the single-most expensive purchase you’ll make, and Architect GP can help you make the most of your investment, while avoiding costly mistakes.

We want to talk to you while you are still figuring out what you want to do, to help you develop the best strategy for design and delivery.

How is Architect GP different to regular architectural services?

  • We are not trying to “win” your project

  • We make it really clear what you’ll get in each service

  • We make it really clear how much each service will cost

  • Our services are affordable and accessible: starting at just $79 +GST

  • We exist to help you save money and avoid costly mistakes, while making the most of your home

What are the benefits of consulting an Architect GP?

We use a medical metaphor to describe our services because we take a holistic view of architecture. Our services centre on you – the client – and all of the other people who will actually live in your home.

Just like a GP, we bring a wealth of training and experience to this role (it typically takes a minimum of 7 years to qualify and register as an architect). That means we have a broad knowledge of design, construction, environmental design, planning systems, material properties and regulatory frameworks to inform our holistic view.

Our Architect GPs are driven by questions like:

  • Will this property provide the outcomes that you are seeking, in an easy and cost-effective way?

  • Can you afford what you want to achieve? and

  • What is the right strategy to achieve your goals and aspirations?

Architect GP provides a new way to access design expertise.

Many people think that architects are unapproachable. That’s our profession’s fault, not yours.

Too many of “us” have made people feel uncomfortable or fearful, by giving the impression that it’s expensive to consult an architect, or that project costs will blow out and threaten your financial security.

There is also a perception that architects put forward designs in their own recognisable style, which may not respond well to your particular needs.

That’s our bad. And we’re sorry.

That’s why we created Architect GP.

We’re a community of architects located around Australia and we want to help more people to navigate the minefield of design and building issues, by providing them with a new way to access expert and impartial advice.

We set out to make this process more affordable and less stressful for homeowners and renovators, because we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to benefit from good design.

It is OK to be unsure about how to change, extend or improve your home. Figuring out how to proceed, which option is best, or which solution offers the best bang-for-buck now and over the long-term can feel overwhelming – so now is the ideal time to consult an Architect GP.

The primary goal of an Architect GP is to guide you to the clarity and confidence you need to move ahead.

Design and building are complex systems and processes, and they can be challenging for people to navigate for the first time (they can even be challenging if you’ve renovated or built a house before, because the industry keeps evolving).

But I don’t know exactly what I want to do yet…

We want to help you get the most out of your project now, and to maximise your investment and return.

Unlike other architects, who might be trying to “win your project” or persuade you that their solution is the “best” option, we are here to help you identify your options, and guide you through a series of important and complex decisions, so you can decide which path suits you best.

We pride ourselves on being super approachable. What motivates us is giving you the best support and advice. We can help you determine whether your ambitions match your budget. We can help you review floor plans and decide which is the best fit or has the most potential. And we can help in lots of other ways, too.

What do you get from your Architect GP consult?

Consult

STEP 1

We’ll engage in meaningful discussions with you to understand your wants and needs, as well as the house you’re looking to improve, or the site where you plan to build.

We use questionnaires and tools to give this process structure.

Consider

STEP 2

Then we’ll weigh up the various options and map out possible scenarios for you to consider, taking into account all of the identified constraints. (Especially where these constraints seem to be fighting each other!)

Convey

STEP 3

We’ll share our ideas, suggestions and advice using a combination of words, sketches and reports. These will be really clear to help you understand the project’s important elements. Typically, our sketches describe key factors like sunlight, shade, and room relationships and they are typically hand drawn.

Connect

STEP 4

Once we’ve delivered our findings, we can refer you to other people in the building industry - including other architects, draftspeople, building designers, builders, engineers and other consultants - to help you take the next steps to realise your project.

An Architect GP will not “take over” your project. We’ll give you answers and professional input (design, analysis, opportunities, cautions) so you can champion your own project.
